fElLoW pLaNeT dWeLlErS...

As you may know, or  have seen in the previous BLOG, this past Saturday June 16th was the "Day of the African Child".   In 1976, children and youth took to the streets in Soweto South Africa to protest the inferior quality of their education as well as the right to be taught in their own language.  In the weeks that followed over a hundred children and youth were shot down in related protests.  Since 1991, the Day of the African Child has been celebrated on June 16th to commemorate their memory and their struggle.  Every year, the day is associated with a different message about issues facing African children this particular year it was "Combat Child Trafficking".

In short, here at AYC the Day of the African Child is what we are all about everyday.  Supporting, and believing in, the strength, beauty, creativity and dreams of the African Child.

For the second consecutive year, AYC collaborated with NGOs and Government Offices in order to organize a Day of the African Child celebration.  This years activities included a panel discussion (on Child Trafficking issues in the Awassa region), a 3 km run, an art contest, a poem contest, music and a special OLT performance.  The festivities were attended by over 2,000 people most under 15 years old!  Enough with the words, take a look...

The stage is set (note the kids-made AYC banner!)...

...as festivities get underway, so does the art contest...

...then an OLT child star kicks, well back-flips, off the performance...

...and the whole gang finishes the performance off in style...

An African Child Day Celebration by African Children.  Something very nice about that.  Stay well.
